"We are excited about this year's schedule," White said. "Our home schedule with UMass, Central Michigan, Miami, Akron, Kent State, Ohio and the rest of the MAC schedule should create a lot of excitement in the Henderson Center and our road contests will present both challenges and opportunities."
The Thundering Herd's regular season gets underway on November 15 opposite George Washington University in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Classic in Lexington, Ky.
"The opportunity to open against George Washington in Rupp Arena with a matchup with Kentucky or Western Kentucky will certainly be a challenge, but its one we are looking forward too," White said.
Marshall's schedule also features a tilt with SEC power Auburn at the Coors Classic Basketball Invitational in Mobile, Ala., a home contest with Atlantic-10 member Massachusetts, and the annual battle with West Virginia University in Charleston.
The Herd will also face Troy State, Winthrop, and Radford in non-conference action, before entering the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule. This season, Marshall will host Northern Illinois, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Buffalo, Ball State, Akron, Miami, Ohio, and Central Michigan in MAC play.
Game times have not been set, due to television considerations.
Marshall returns three starters from last year's 18-9 squad, including seniors Tamar Slay and J.R. VanHoose. Slay, a 6-9 shooting guard, is among the 50 players selected to the Wooden Award Watch List, while VanHoose, a 6-10 forward/center, ranks among the nation's leaders in rebounds and "double-doubles."

Marshall University and first-year head coach Royce Chadwick have announced the release of their basketball schedule for the 2001-02 season. Highlights of the schedule include tournaments in Washington, D.C. (American University) and Fresno, California (Fresno State University), and a single game against Big 12 school Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in addition to a strenuous MAC schedule.
Chadwick, who came to Marshall after seven successful seasons at perennial women's basketball power Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, is extremely excited to get the season underway and to put the Thundering Herd women's basketball program into the national limelight.
"We're very excited to get the opportunity to play in the Washington, D.C. area, a hotbed of women's hoops," Chadwick said. "And the trip to Fresno will get us much-needed exposure on the West Coast. Our team is craving national exposure, and the best way to do that is to take the team on the road."
Chadwick also points to the team's home-opener against Navy, a game in which the athletic department is billing as W.A.R. versus the Midshipmen, with W.A.R. being an acronym for Women's Attendance Record. The home attendance record for Marshall women's game is 5,245, a mark set against Morehead State on February 4th, 1987. "The W.A.R. game is a huge tipoff for our program, with our goal being to send a shockwave in women's basketball across this country, " Chadwick said.
The Herd host non-conference foe Robert Morris on Tuesday, December 18th before heading to Richmond, KY for a tournament with Eastern Kentucky on December 29th and 30th. Eastern Division MAC champion Kent State comes to Huntington on Saturday, January 16th in the only meeting between the two teams. Other conference opponents that come calling to the Henderson Center are Northern Illinois, Ohio, Western Michigan, Miami, Eastern Michigan, Bowling Green, and Akron.
