Marshall Adds Three Star Safety

With the loss of AJ Leggett and Taj Letman, Marshall was in big time need of players at the safety position. They appeared to have solved that with two mid year three star safeties set to enroll later this month.

Prior to the start of the 2015 football season, Marshall was set at the safety position with several high profile players.  As the season came to an end and graduation began to hit, the depth at the safety position was completely different.

In August, the starting safeties appeared to be Senior Taj Letman, and former four star recruit AJ Leggett.  Before the opening game against Purdue, Tiquan Lang beat out Leggett and played an excellent game winning himself several national defensive player of the week honors with double digit tackles and two interceptions returned for touchdowns.  Eventually Leggett left the team, and now Letman has graduated.  That leaves Lang, former four star recruit Kendall Gant and late 2015 signee, JUCO Corey Neely.

Clearly depth was going to be a concern, that is not the case anymore.  In June, Hilton Head Island High School product, three star, Jeremiah Maddox committed to the Herd, and a few weeks ago it was determined that Maddox would be enrolling early and be eligible to practice this spring.  The 6’2”, 185 pound son of a coach expects to come in and compete immediately.

Then, over the weekend, head coach Doc Holliday’s staff reeled in another late recruiting season surprise, in three star JUCO safety (former four star out of high school) CJ Reavis.  Reavis went to Virginia Tech where he was playing very well and was expected to start prior to being dismissed from the team.  The dismissal caused the 6’1”, 210 pound safety to transfer to East Mississippi Community College.

Coming out of Chester, Virginia, Reavis was the second rated safety in the state of Virginia.  He was also the 5th rated safety on the East coast, and the 38th rated safety in the country.  He parlayed his 2014 season into setting himself up to be the starting safety for Virginia Tech in 2015, before he was dismissed.  Reavis was recruited to Virginia Tech by Frank Beamer’s son, Shane.

In addition to Reave and Maddox, Marshall also is adding Peyton Scott to the 2016 recruiting class.  Scott is out of Lake Braddock Secondary School.
