The Linebacker position is one that has been very good for Head Coach Doc Holliday over the past couple of seasons. The Herd has produced two straight CUSA defensive players of the year, both coming from the linebacker position in Neville Hewitt and Evan McKelvey. This position has taken its hits in the past twelve months. (FULL BREAKDOWN AVAILABLE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STORY)
The Herd has lost four big time, highly talented linebackers. Most notably were Evan McKelvey and fellow senior DJ Hunter. Both players departed the program after spectacular five year runs. Early last season the Herd also lost highly rated linebacker Stefan Houston who was originally going to Maryland then decided to come to Marshall and played a lot of important minutes as a true freshman.
The most recent departure from the program was junior to be, Raheim Huskey. Huskey arrived at Marshall three seasons ago as an academic non qualifier. He was a late addition to the class. As a freshman in 2014 he gradually worked his way into the rotation at linebacker and played several important possessions.
Most notably he stepped up late in the CUSA championship game against LA Tech. He ended the season by getting into 10 games, making 24 tackles and 2 sacks. In the 2015 season he started the season well before getting suspended midway through the year. He again stepped up and played big minutes against Purdue.
This second suspension, announced by the school early yesterday morning, would by most accounts, seem to be more of the permanent nature.
The loss of Huskey will be big, but the cupboard is far from bare.
A four star commit from Alabama, a five star JUCO from Arizona State, a former Syracuse commit, and a former linebacker from Maryland, just to name a few.
Here is an in depth look at the linebacker postion.
