The season has not going as expected for Marshall fans, players, and coaches. Coming into the season off of three straight 10 plus win years and with a multitude of all CUSA preseason players, a 2 – 7 record 9 games in was not what was expected. Not surprising, the coaching staff is already taking steps to improve on a couple areas on need from this season, along the defensive front and at the cornerback position.
Corners Rodney Allen and Chris Jackson have shown some signs improved play at times, but the position is still one that needs vast improvement. The defensive line lost one player in Tomell One to attrition, and back up tackle Joe Massaquoi will be graduating. Defensive end Gary Thompson will be graduating, as will linebackers Tre Tyler and Shawn Petty.
The coaching staff appears ready to replace several of these depth position spots with immediate help from the Junior College ranks. However, will the JC route help, or will it be like it was a few years ago when nearly the entire JC class did not help.
Below are two charts.
The first chart is a look at the junior college recruits Coach Holliday has brought into the program the past five years.
The second chart is a look at the JC offers that Marshall has extended thus far.
