The countdown begins. Today marks 99 days until kickoff of the 2017 football season for the Marshall Thundering Herd. So, let’s take a look at the number 99
Who will be wearing the number this year:
Jason Smith – Smith is a 6’3”, 277 pound defensive tackle. Smith is down from 300 pounds last season. He will be a redshirt junior this year. He will play a big role in the defensive front for the 2017 Thundering Herd.
1.5 tackles for loss
4 pass break ups
1 blocked kick
One of the best to wear number 99:
Vinny Curry – Is there even any doubt. Curry was one of the most dominating players to ever play for the Herd, and won the Conference USA defensive player of the year award in 2011 before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012, where he still plays.
99 years ago:
1918 – There was no football season as the country was in the midst of World War I.
Marshall finished the year ranked 10th in the country. The Herd ran the table, at 13 – 0. Marshall ended the season with a Mid American Conference championship game win over Western Michigan and a Motor City Bowl victory over BYU.
This would go down as one of, if not the greatest, seasons in the History of all of Marshall sports.
Stay tuned as the Countdown continues!!
