MU Welcomes 31 Newcomers; Updated '04 Roster

Marshall University will get on the field for the first time on August 9 to prepare for the season opener versus Troy on September 4. Herd returnees and newcomers both reported to campus on August 8 and will have a running test and get fit for helmets (and other equipment, although shoulder pads cannot be worn until Aug. 11; full pads Aug. 13) and shoes, as well as soft goods and jersey, for the first practice this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Here is a brief look at the expected new Herd members.

#62, Matt Altobello, 6-5, 290, OL, Keyser HS, Keyser, WV. Notes: All-State lineman who played in North-South All-Star Game in Charleston, helping North to win and over 250 yards rushing…Termed "a steal" by Marshall coaches…lined up alongside of new MU teammate, Joe Bragg, in All-Star game, blocking for new Herd member Ben Gum.

#31, Marty Biagi, 6-0, 170, P/K, Shelby County HS, Shelbyville, KY. Notes: Averaged 44.3 yards per punt in 2003, downing 23 inside the 20-yard line and 13 inside the 10…Hit nine of 12 field goals, with all three misses from plus-50 yards…long of 48 yards, six field goals 40-plus…85 percent touchbacks on kickoffs…First team All-State.

#44, Ahmad Bradshaw, 5-10, 180, RB/CB, Graham HS, Bluefield, VA. Notes: Rushed for 2,557 yards and 31 TD as senior last year…2,282 yards and 27 TD as junior…averaged 10 yards per carry in career…originally signed with UVA, but released from scholarship before enrolling due to misdemeanor charge of fleeing. Reportedly, the matter will be resolved on Friday.

#94, Joe Bragg, 6-4, 254, TE/DE, Morgantown HS, Morgantown, WV. Notes: Three year starter at Morgantown H.S. where he was twice named first-team all-state and All-Morgantown Dominion Post ... Helped Morgantown to two state football titles and was the 2003 runner-up for the Hunt Award (best lineman in West Virginia) ... Has a 4.9 40-yard dash time…Starter at TE in North-South All-Star Game.

#18, Jonathan Dinkins, 5-10, 170, K, Hereford HS, Monkton, MD. Notes: Holds the Maryland state record for career extra-point kicks with 140 from 2001-2003…Second team All-Maryland in "small" schools division…Team was number 38-ranked in state with 9-3 mark.

#92, Bilal El-Amin, 6-3, 240, DE, Lafayette HS, Lexington, KY. Notes: Recorded eight sacks, 86 tackles, and 19 tackles for loss despite missing four and a half games due to a high ankle sprain ... Garnered all-city and second team all-state accolades ... Also recruited by Kentucky, Louisville, Northwestern, Michigan State, Purdue, and Cincinnati.

#37, Terry Easmon, 5-8, 160, DB, West Port HS, Ocala, FL. Notes: son of former Florida Gators star and NFL player Ricky Easmon…Rushed for 152 yards versus Mitchell…Rushed 15 times for 214 yards and two TDs versus Belleview…Scored 62-yard reception against Seabreeze.

#1, Marcus Fitzgerald, 5-10, 195, RB, Academy of Holy Angels, Minneapolis, MN. Notes: Joined Marshall program in January, a "Gray" shirt, with five years to play football at MU ... Rushed for more than 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in his prep career ... As a senior he rushed for 1,300 yards, including a game with 228 yards on 34 carries ... Named team MVP ... All-state, all-conference, and all-metro as a senior ... Moved to wide receiver this spring by Herd coaches, same position as brother Larry Fitzgerald, Jr., selected in first round of 2004 NFL by the Arizona Cardinals and coach Dennis Green.

#21, Ben Gum, 5-11, 225, RB/LB, Parkersburg South HS, Parkersburg, WV. Notes: Named first team All-State and captain of the defensive squad…Recorded 185 tackles on defense and rushed for 20 touchdowns and 1,019 yards in leading Patriots to AAA state championship, in which he scored winning TD and rushed for 232 yards…Named MVP for North squad in North-South All-Star Game in June, rushing for 147 yards, two scores and recording nine tackles on defense…Won Huff Award as West Virginia's best high school defender.

#40, Chris Hawkins, 5-10, 184, CB, University of North Carolina; Kinston HS, Kinston, NC. Notes: transfer from Tar Heels…Hawkins will have one-year eligibility in 2005 after sitting out 2004 by NCAA rules.

#21, Ian Hoskins, 6-2, 190, FS, Campbellsville HS, Campbellsville, KY. Notes: The Class A Region 2 Player-of-the-Year as voted on by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association ... Recorded more than 1,800 yards rushing, caught 21 passes for 285 yards, and scored 24 touchdowns and two two-point conversions ... Notched 86 tackles and grabbed six interceptions ... Also plays basketball and averages nearly 18 points per game.

#51, Jason Kaminski, 6-3, 225, LB, Hargrave Military; Bowling Green State; C.D. Hylton HS, Woodbridge, VA. Notes: Originally signed with BGSU, left when Urban Myer took Utah job…Hargrave team MVP ... An all-state, all-northwest region, all-district, and all-conference selection in high school ... Helped C.D. Hylton to two state championships, while recording an overall record of 40-2.
