2001 GMAC BOWL Events Calendar

Mobile, Alabama is again the center stage for the beginning of college bowl season. Mobile hosts the following events and more during the week of the GMAC Bowl. Mark your calendar now to visit Mobile prior to the big game by attending the events listed below:

ALABAMA POWER COMPANY
Governor Don Siegelman's Welcoming Reception
(Friday, Dec. 14, 2001)
* Mobile-native and Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman hosts a welcoming reception at the Government Plaza Building in downtown Mobile for the administration and coaches of each bowl team, both conference commissioners and their support staff, local and national media representatives, local and national corporate sponsors and invited guests.
* The governor's reception will be limited to 500 people and is sponsored by Alabama Power Company. Invitation Only

GREAT SOUTHERN WOOD Basketball Luncheon


(Friday, Dec. 14, 2001)
* Former Louisiana State Head Basketball Coach Dale Brown will address an expected crowd of over 350 people consisting of bowl sponsors, participating basketball team memebers and guests.
* Last year, Alabama's Head Coach, Mark Gottfried and Louisville's Head Coach, Denny Crum spoke.

GODFATHER'S PIZZA Players Hospital Visit
(Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001)
* Players from both visiting teams will visit the children staying at USA Women's & Children's hospital

COORS Classic Basketball Doubleheader

(Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001)
* This year's competitors include University of Georgia, Auburn University, Marshall University and University of South Alabama.
* Comcast Charter Sports Southeast will televise both games regionally, from the Mitchell Center, to more than 6 million homes.

ITC DELTA COM 5 K Run
(Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001)
* 5 K Run in West Mobile. Starting and Finishing point will be at the Grelot Rd. United Methodist Church.

KENNY ROGERS ROASTERS Team Luncheon & Tour on the Battleship USS Alabama
(Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001)
* Each participating football team, traveling party and invited guests will enjoy a lunch on the famous World War II battleship.
* Bowl sponsors, city officials and local media have the opportunity to meet each teams players and coaches and visit this Mobile landmark.
* An estimated crowd of more than 400 people is expected to attend.

WINTZELL'S OYSTER HOUSE Wives Day Out
(Monday, Dec. 17, 2001)
* Special day for the wives and spouses of the many coaches and conference staff.
* The day includes shopping and a visit to local historical sites.
* Lunch is provided and local dignitaries host the day - transportation provided.

ALLTEL Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfast
(Monday, Dec. 17, 2001)
* Bobby Bowden will address members of each participating bowl team, city officials, corporate sponsors and local FCA groups.
* A limited number of tickets will be available to the public. A crowd of more than 900 people is expected.

FUJIFILM-GMAC Bowl Learning Through Reading Program
(Monday, Dec. 17, 2001)
* 5th grade students from the state of Alabama, and parts of MS, LA and FL are invited to participate in the reading program.
* 10 winners will be selected to come to Mobile and participate in the week's activities.
* On Monday, Dec. 17th, 2000 Mobile area 4th grade students will be invited to the Mobile Convention Center to meet and talk to the players of both teams competing in the GMAC Bowl. Players will focus on the importance of reading and staying in school.

GMAC Financial Services Concert - TENTATIVE
(Monday, December 17, 2001)
* A nationally known singer/group will perform at a local Mobile concert venue.

MOBILE GREYHOUND PARK Media Night
(Monday, Dec. 17, 2001)
* The 50-75 media personalities from across the country, covering the GMAC Bowl will be treated to a welcoming reception.

MOBILE MYSTICKS HOCKEY Game
(Tuesday Dec. 18, 2001)
* Teams, and university bands are invited to see a Mysticks Hockey Club play at the Civic Arena (dependent on 2001 schedule).

G.M.A.C. FINANCIAL SERVICES Mayor's Luncheon
(Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001)
* Mobile Mayor Mike Dow will speak at the Mayor's Luncheon honoring nationally known Americans. In 1999, Pete Rose spoke to a crowd of over 1600 people, and in 2000 the event was SOLD OUT with over 2000 fans in attendance to see NASCAR's Jeff Gordon.
* The luncheon will also include various city officials, media, corporate sponsors, traveling parties of each Bowl team and other invited guests.
* This years featured speaker will be NFL Hall of Fame Honoree Mike Ditka.

GREER'S FOOD TIGER Mardi Gras Parade
(Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001)
* A Mardi Gras parade will be held in the streets of downtown Mobile starting at 6:30 P.M.
* 16 Mardi Gras societies will be represented with floats and throws for the crowd.
* Several college and high school bands will join the parade.
* More than 50,000 people are expected to pack the streets of downtown Mobile for this early rendition of the Mardi Gras season.

Mardi Gras Street Party and Pep Rallies
(Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001)
* Immediately following the parade, the party will move to the Mobile Convention Center for music, food, and fireworks!
* Both participating universities will hold their official pep rallies.
* A crowd of 40-50,000 is expected for the street party.

COORS Alumni Golf Tournament, Presented by Edwin Watts Golf Shop
(Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001)
* Alumni groups from the competing Bowl teams are invited to play in a golf tournament at the Linksmen Golf Course.

GMAC BOWL
(Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001)
* A national television audience will tune in to ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. for the third annual GMAC Bowl.
* Last year's game was SOLD OUT! Over 40,500 fans watched TCU and Southern Miss compete.
* A National Radio Network will broadcast the game throughout the country and will also be broadcast live back to each team's radio networks.

Ladd-Peebles Stadium is the site of the 2001 GMAC Bowl on December 19
