Kent Continues Herd's Losing Streak, 75-66

KENT, Ohio — Junior center Kevin Warzysnki (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Charleston So.) matched his season high with 20 points to lead the Kent State University men's basketball team to its third straight victory, 75-66 over Marshall University in Mid-American Conference action tonight, Jan. 22, in front of 4,088 fans at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent.

The Golden Flashes (13-6, 5-3 MAC), who remained unbeaten at home on the season, connected on 56.7 percent (17-of-30) and had a game-breaking 15-2 run in the first half to build a 20-point advantage, 42-22, at the break. KSU outscored Marshall (3-13, 0-7 MAC) 30-10 over the final 7:26 of the opening period.

Kent State led by 21 on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Armon Gates (Country Club Hills, Ill./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) with 13:01 to go in the game. However, the Golden Flashes would go without a field goal over the next 11:36 as Marshall was able to climb back to within six points, cutting the lead to 67-61 on Tre Whitted's fourth three-pointer of the game with just under two minutes remaining.

A three-pointer by senior guard Jason Edwin (Road Town, British Virgin Islands/Southeastern C.C. [Iowa]) with 1:25 left ended a 21-7 Marshall run and put Kent State up nine. The Golden Flashes sealed the victory by hitting five-of-six free throws in the final minute.

Edwin finished with 17 points and was a perfect four-for-four from three-point range while Gates added 11 off the bench. Freshman guard Marshall Crenshaw (Detroit, Mich./Mackenzie) chipped in with eight points and five of the Golden Flashes' 21 assists off the bench.

A.W. Hamilton led Marshall and shared top scoring honors with Warzysnki with 20 points. Whitted scored 18 and Mark Patton scored 11 points to go with a game and career-high 15 rebounds. The Thundering Herd outrebounded Kent State 42-36 but shot just 38.7% (24-of-62) from the field including just seven-of-26 from behind the arc.

GAME NOTES: Kent State improves to 8-0 at the M.A.C. Center this season... the Golden Flashes have won four straight over Marshall and lead the all-time series 27-26. Kent State is 9-0 in the M.A.C. Center against Marshall... the Thundering Herd has lost three straight games overall and seven-of-eight... Edwin and Gates were a combined seven-of-10 from three-point range and are 14-of-23 (60.9%) the last two games... the Golden Flashes were nine-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point range... Marshall's leading scorer, freshman Joe Miles (12.5 ppg.), was held to just three-points on one-of-five shooting... junior forward Nate Gerwig (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) returned to action after missing the last two games and scored four points and grabbed three rebounds in eight minutes... Kent State went 3-0 on its week-long home stand... Kent State's 20-point halftime lead was its largest of the season... the two teams will meet again for the second time in three games on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
