Summer Recruiting Starts Up

Summertime doesn't mean a period of rest and relaxation any more. Not in the world of college football recruiting. In our first summer recruiting story ever, Herd Insider brings you the scoop on one Virginia recruit already catching the eyes of the Marshall football coaches.

Marshall University coaches have checked out William-Fleming High School, Va., speedster C.J. Bannister recently. Bannister, who appears is headed to Hargrave Military for a year of prep school, is a running back and defensive back that is 5'8" but only 160 pounds. Bannister won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races plus the long jump, last week at the Cosmopolitan Track Meet. In the 100 Bannister ran a 10.92, in the 200 a 22.1, and posted a 50.44 time in the 400.

According to the Roanoke Times, Bannister twice was timed in 4.4 seconds for 40 yards at a recent "combine" at Hargrave, and has attracted the attention of Marshall assistant coach and defensive coordinator Bill Wilt.

Hargrave coach Lee said Wilt told him that the Thundering Herd will recruit Bannister if he goes to Hargrave.

Herd Insider will attempt to interview the new Hargrave head coach Robert Prunty this summer. We will keep you posted on any new recruiting news as it happens. Look for a summer recruiting update (and an in-depth feature story on one Huntington-area recruit) in the June 17 issue of Herd Insider!
