Updated Herd Roster, News From Media Day

The Thundering Herd started the process of getting ready for its opening game on September 2 at No. 7 West Virginia, in today's USA Today Coaches Poll, with the first practice of the season on Thursday. No real surprises for second-year head coach Mark Snyder as his 100-plus man team hit the field for the first of 28 practices leading up to the opener. One or two things stood out on day one.

Right tackle Wesley Jones was in a blue jersey to start the year, due to an automobile accident recently. Coach Mark Snyder does not have a timetable for his return at this time. Jones' absence gave senior Chris Barnes, who looks much bigger than his playing weight listed from last season of 265 pounds, a chance to work with the ones yesterday. Also with the ones at right guard was Brian Leggett, who was there during the spring while John Inman was out with injuries.

Players who stood out in the first practice included newcomers Josh Johnson, at middle linebacker, and Travius Thompson, a freshman wide receiver from Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Johnson, who comes in from Georgia Military, had come out of drills with the University of Georgia in 2005's spring as the number one middle linebacker. He transferred to prep school after a falling out with UGA head coach Mark Richt and is already running with the second team behind senior Brandon Souder. Thompson may get a chance to play right away, with junior college transfer Darius Passmore not scheduled to join the Herd, along with cornerback Aaron Johnson and Mario Harvey, until January while they concentrate this fall on academics. Also missing from the first practice was prop 48 receiver Ridge Corbin, who Snyder said was home in Stone Mountain, Georgia with "personal issues." Thompson made some dandy catches and showed great speed, footwork and hands.

Returning players also grabbed coach Snyder's eye. "Emanuel Spann looks like a different person," said Snyder to reporters of the Herd's sophomore wide out who missed 2005 with a knee injury. "He looks fast!" Also catching the coach's attention was senior safety Curtis Keyes, sophomore defensive end Albert McCellan, Souder at linebacker, Leggett at guard and Ian O'Connor at punting. Overall, the Herd returners looked bigger, faster and stronger in just jerseys and shorts with helmets. "We are a better looking team this year," said Snyder.

Here is the Herd Insider roster, with notes on players expected to join the Herd now in 2007:
