Marshall-Bowling Green Set To Renew Rivalry

HUNTINGTON - Marshall University Director of Athletics Bob Marcum announced Monday the Thundering Herd will play a two-game football series with the Falcons of Bowling Green State University, beginning in 2009. Bowling Green will travel to Huntington on September, 26 of 2009 and the Thundering Herd will travel to Bowling Green on September, 18 of 2010 in a renewal of the former Mid-American foes.

The home and home series will renew the rivalry the two schools shared while Marshall was a member of the MAC from 1953-69 and 1997-2005. Marshall and Bowling Green have met 27 times on the gridiron and the Falcons own a 20-7 record in the series that dates back to 1954. Marshall won four out of the last six meetings between the two schools after Marshall re-joined the MAC in 1997. The Falcons took a 56-35 in the last game played between the two on November 13, 2004 at Bowling Green, but the Herd won the last game in Huntington, 37-31. Marshall is 5-8 versus the Falcons in Huntington all-time, losing the first seven in a row between 1955 and 1967.

Two of the great wins in Marshall history, however, came in 1969 and 1971. The Herd broke a 27-game non-winning streak in 1969 (0-26-1, back to 1966) with a 21-16 win over Don Nehlen's Falcons. Then in 1971, the "Young" Thundering Herd won over BGSU 12-10 on Homecoming as Dave Walsh scored the winning touchdown and the Falcons missed a late field goal. The loss was the first of three straight that cost Bowling Green a bowl berth, on a day where BG brought grass shoes for the new Astroturf at Fairfield Stadium and heavy warp-knit jerseys that they were roasting in on a hot 80-degree October day. Marshall would also shutout BGSU on Homecoming in 1997, 28-0, and go on to win the MAC in the first season in D-I football and play in the Motor City Bowl.

The addition of Bowling Green gives Marshall three non-conference games for 2009 and completes the 2010 non-conference schedule. Marshall's future non-conference schedules through 2011 are below. Home games are in bold.
