Miami Chooses Freeman As Quarterback

Junior Kirby Freeman has been named the starting quarterback by Hurricane football head coach Randy Shannon at his weekly press conference at the University of Miami. The Hurricanes have a first-ever meeting with the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday at the Orange Bowl. Freeman is a running quarterback from Brownwood, Texas, who won the job over former starter Kyle Wright, a fifth-year senior.

"Both of those guys worked well in the off-season and did a lot of great things to try to win the job, but as a coach you have to make tough decisions," said UM coach Randy Shannon. "We felt like Kirby gives us the best opportunity to win games." Freeman became the starter for the Hurricanes in last four games of 2006 as Wright was recuperating from thumb surgery, and Wright has also been bothered recently by a left knee injury. Freeman finished 2-2 in the games he started last season.

He was named the most valuable player in the MPC Computers Bowl after throwing for 272 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He finished the year completing 59 of 108 passes for seven touchdowns, with eight interceptions. He also ran 41 times for 109 yards and one touchdown. Also today, Shannon announced that receiver Sam Shields has been suspended for the Marshall game for violating team rules. Shields had 37 catches for 501 yards and four touchdowns last season, and had four catchers for 101 yards and a 78-yard touchdown in the MPC Computers Bowl win over Nevada last December.

John Rochford, a 6-foot-2, 273-pound senior who was the long snapper for the ‘Canes the past two seasons, has been named the starting center. Rochford has been the long snapper for 24 straight games, played H-Back and fullback in five games last year and played guard in five games in 2005.

Freshman DeMarcus Van Dyke the starter at cornerback. The true freshman is out of Pace High School in Miami, and was ranked as the No. 7 player in the state last year by Scout.com. He will start opposite Randy Phillips, a junior with eight starts last season and two career interceptions. They will be backed up by junior Carlos Armour, who missed much of 2005 and 2006 with injury and has appeared in just 10 games in three years, and Tervaris Johnson, a sophomore who played special teams last year but did not record a tackle. Senior Glenn Sharpe, an expected starter, is sidelined with an injury. Sharpe had three starts last season and recorded 18 tackles in 12 games.
