Herd Names Starters For Opener With ISU

Marshall coach Mark Snyder had his first press conference with the full media contingent on Tuesday, and released the depth chart for this year's Thundering Herd. Snyder stressed this was a starting point for the team, and expects to see numerous substitutions on defense, along with a number of players at offensive tackle, receiver, back and even quarterback, depending how the game goes with ISU.

Snyder spoke about the depth chart being a starting point, not the end-all on who will play. "You will see Ian or Michael moving down, and Brandon, Johnny, John and many others moving in and out up front," said the head coach of Ian Hoskins, named as the starting defensive end but who has played since spring at tackle. Michael Janac will play end and tackle, and John Jacobs, Johnny Jones, Brandon Bullock, John Youboty, Vinny Curry and others will appear on defense. "Brandon Burns will play," said Snyder of the junior college player behind Corey Hart and fellow juco Andre Portis in the depth chart at the short side (SAM) linebacker.

Others who will play for sure include the three backs, with Darius Marshall getting the start and Chubb Small and Terrell Edwards playing for sure, with possible appearances by Martin Ward or Jordan Taylor. Sure to play as well are all four offensive tackles - Brandon Campbell and Daniel Baldridge off the bench and Charles Wood and Ryan Tillman starting. Jimmy Rogers and Landis Provancha will spell Josh Evans at guard; Chad Scofield has backed up Brian Leggett all camp, and John Bruhin is listed as the No. 3 center although he has shown at guard since returning from injury. Walk-on Chris has done a good job at center and guard as a former Knight from nearby Cabell Midland High School.

Snyder also announced Brian Anderson will play but Mark Cann will start at quarterback, "depending how the game goes." Snyder also named his captains today, making all the seniors on the Herd captains for 2008. "Those guys have done a great job leading, on and off the field," said Snyder. The 15-members of the Marshall football senior class for the Herd: receiver Darius Passmore, receiver E.J. Wynn, safety C.J. Spillman, defensive lineman Ian Hoskins, receiver Emmanuel Spann, nickel Aaron Johnson, tailback Chubb Small, linebacker Phillip Gamble, defensive tackle Cody Tominack, linebacker Maurice Kitchens, defensive tackle Joe Bragg, guard Matt Altobello, center Brian Leggett, tight end Matt Parkhurst and defensive tackle Montel Glasco, who may return by the sixth or seventh game of the season.

Marshall red-shirt freshman Mark Cann will get his first collegiate start on Saturday against Illinois State's Redbirds. Game time is 4:30 p.m. at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, with a 2:30 air time on the Thundering Herd/ISP Sports Network, heard locally on ESPN 930 AM and The Dawg 93.7 FM. photo by Greg Perry, Herd Insider
