Brandon Powell Released From MU Basketball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University men's basketball coach Donnie Jones announced today that Brandon Powell, a redshirt sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., has been dismissed from the team effective immediately due to a violation of team policy.

"I'd like to thank Brandon for his hard work the last two years," Jones said. "He's a great kid and I wish him nothing but the best in his future."

Powell transferred to Marshall from Florida following the 2006-07 season. He sat out the 2007-08 campaign due to NCAA transfer regulations, along with Chris Lutz (Purdue) and Octavius Spann (Georgetown). In four games with the Thundering Herd (1-3) this season, Powell averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds while playing 21.0 minutes per game.

The Marshall men, 1-3 after opening with a win over WVU Tech and then taking three close losses in Daytona Beach, all part of the Glenn Wilkes Classic, will host Old Dominion on Saturday, November 29, at 11:30 a.m., part of a basketball-football doubleheader. The football team will close the season with Tulsa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

MU lost to Mississippi by four, Morgan State by five and Wisconsin-Green Bay by six at the tournament held last weekend at the Ocean Center in Daytona, Florida. The Herd beat the Golden Bears of WVU Tech in the home opener, 110-57. ODU will be the second home game, followed by ETSU on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
