Top Tennessee Kicker Makes Official Visit

Herd Insider has learned that a highly-rated kicker from Tennessee is set to visit Marshall this weekend on an official visit. And no, it's not Britton Colquitt...

According to sources in Tennessee, Halls High School (Knoxville) kicker Ian O'Connor is making an official visit to Marshall the weekend of January 25. O'Connor won the inaugural Mr. Football Kicker of the Year Award in Tennessee in December, 2002, being voted the state's top kicker.

"He's absolutely deserving, not only for his accomplishments on the field, but his actions in the classroom and the community," Halls coach Gary Shephard commented in a Knoxville (TN) News story about O'Connor winning the award.

In 2002, O'Connor hit 17-of-21 field goals, including a school-record 52-yarder this season for the Red Devils. Despite a hamstring injury that hampered him late in the season, O'Connor connected on 15 field goals of at least 30 yards and nailed 30 of his 33 kickoffs into the end zone.

Herd Insider is attempting to interview Halls coach Gary Shephard over the weekend, and we'll carry the interview in the January 28, 2002 print issue of Herd Insider.

Marshall football has so far received 16 verbal commitments, leaving the Herd with only two available scholarships to fill in the final two weeks of recruiting before national signing day.
