Derwin Gray has helped his Dunbar (DC) team to a 3-3 record so far. With just one conference game in the books, there are still four conference games remaining for the Crimson Tide. Despite the early four-star ranking from Scout for the 2013 class, and a heavy volume of interest, this is where Gray's focus is for now.
"We got about (four) games left," Gray said. "We have a tough schedule. We're just trying to win this championship right now. We play a lot of competitive teams on our schedule. We're practicing hard, and we got a good thing going on. Right now, we're focused on winning this whole thing, but we have to take it game-by-game."
Gray says he's humbled by the amount of early interest he's received, but again reverts back to the focus on his 2011 season and his schoolwork. He did talk about some of the schools he's heard from.
"Right now, I've been hearing from the likes of Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Maryland, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan State," Gray said. "There's so many schools. It's been blowing my mind; hearing from all these top schools following me. It's nice, but right now, I'm just focused with school."
Gray has been to one Maryland—the season-opener against Miami—and is hoping to get to another Terps game this season. It's too early to claim favorites, but when asked about how Maryland has recruited him, it's safe to say the Terps will be in it with Gray.
"I went to that first game again Miami; it was a very great game," Gray said. "I love the uniforms. It's something new."
The coaching staff is having the biggest impact in Gray's interest with Maryland.
"I love the coaching staff," Gray added. "I like (outside linebackers coach) Lyndon Johnson. I love Randy Edsall. I talk to him on Facebook. I have a lot on interest in Maryland. I'm trying to get back down there again. If I don't get back for another game, definitely in the spring."
Gray will be at the Rutgers-Navy game this weekend in Piscataway, New Jersey.
