Hawkins Named USBWA National Player of Week

Terrapin junior named national Player of the Week by USBWA.

St. Louis - Junior Tianna Hawkins of the eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (21-4, 8-4 ACC) was named the U.S. Basketball Writers' Association's Player of the Week the organization announced Tuesday, just one day after being named ACC Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

As the Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, Hawkins was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.

Hawkins shot over 72 percent from the field, averaged 18.3 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per contest last week. In a 64-56 win at No. 22 Georgia Tech, Hawkins was 11-for-13 from the field. Four of her made shots were jump shots from around the floor. Her 23 points vs. the Yellow Jackets were a new career-high. She added two blocks and two assists with nine boards.

Hawkins followed up with 14 points and six rebounds in a 91-71 win over Clemson. In Sunday's tough 76-74 loss to No. 6 Miami, Hawkins was 8-11 from the floor with 10 boards. She totaled 18 points for her 10th double-double of the season. Hawkins leads the nation in field goal percentage at 63.3 percent and leads the conference in rebounding with 9.4 per ACC game.
