Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup wide receiver
The rundown: Burns was recruited to play quarterback for the Terrapins but after redshirting his first year, he made the transition to wide receiver in the spring of 2011. In his redshirt freshman season, Burns played in seven games as a reserve wide receiver. He had a total of one catch for 17 yards that came in the Terps' 37-31 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers. At 6-foot-3, Burns has good size as a wide receiver and can also make quick cuts.
Expectations for 2012: The biggest thing Burns lacks is experience at the wideout position, catching only one pass all of last season. He has the size and speed but with bigger names like Stefon Diggs and Nigel King and more experienced veterans in Kevin Dorsey and Kerry Boykins, Burns will most serve as a reserve wide receiver again. He should see some more playing time, but given the crowded depth chart, it is unlikely that he will get the start. Dorsey should be healthy by the regular season, but if his health is still in doubt, Burns could find himself playing a bigger role in the Terps offense until Dorsey's ready to return.
