Meet the Terps Offense: #24 Jeff Hernandez

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps, first looking at the offense.

Player: Jeff Hernandez

Hometown: Silver Spring, Md.

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 5-foot-10, 235 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup fullback

The rundown: Hernandez transferred to Maryland from Bowie State in 2010 and had to sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules. He did not get any playing time last season as a reserve fullback but was named the scout team offensive player of the week before the home game against Clemson. He played on the defensive line at Bowie State but lost weight and now plays fullback for the Terps.

Expectations for 2012: Hernandez will be the backup to Tyler Cierski next season and should see the field in his senior season. Cierski will be used in the majority of the plays needing a fullback, but Hernandez is capable of filling in for a few downs and will help add some security to the fullback position in the event of Cierski suffering an injury. While Maryland will probably not carry three fullbacks into the season, if they do, Goins could possibly overtake Hernandez at some point as the primary backup to Cierski. Goins will likely redshirt his freshman year, giving Hernandez the backup spot.
