Meet the Terps Offense: #38 Jake Wheeler

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps, first looking at the offense.

Player: Jake Wheeler

Hometown: Hollywood, Fla.

Class: Sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot-7, 300 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup tackle

The rundown: Wheeler is very athletic and played in all 12 games last season as a reserve offensive lineman. He has a very large build and was part of the offensive line unit that helped the Terps rank third in the ACC in rushing yards (169.3 yards per game) and fourth in fewest sacks allowed (1.4 sacks allowed per game). Wheeler was also a regular on the field goal unit and the extra point attempt unit last season.

Expectations for 2012: Wheeler is third on the preseason depth chart behind Justin Gilbert and Andrew Zeller at right tackle. Wheeler should still get a lot of playing time as a member of the field goal unit and will also see some time as a reserve tackle. Given Gilbert's history of missing time due to injury, Wheeler may find himself playing much more if Gilbert ends up missing part of the season. Wheeler is a reliable backup and will look to improve on his blocking and pass protection next season.
