Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup defensive end
The rundown: Bowers is a quick defensive end with a lot of strength and was one of eight true freshman to get playing time last season. Bowers played in all 12 games last season and started the last 11. He finished tied for fourth on the team with six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He had a season high nine tackles and two tackles for loss against Boston College and had four tackles, three solo tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery against N.C. State. Bowers finished the season with 36 total tackles, 14 of them being solo tackles. He missed most of the spring practices with heart palpitations.
Expectations for 2012: The defensive end position is a wide open race between Justin Anderson, Andre Monroe and Bowers. Bowers started the last 11 games last season and could get the start out of continuity, but Monroe and Anderson played extremely well when given their chances. Regardless of whether Bowers will start, Maryland's coaching staff will look to get him onto the field as much as they can as long as he can stay fit and it would not be surprising to see him surpass his stats from lats season even if he is not starting.
