Meet the Terps Defense: #4 Clarence Claiborne

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Clarence Claiborne

Hometown: Rockville, Md.

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-0, 210 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup strong safety

The rundown: Claiborne was a transfer from Bowie State who came to the Terps with high school and Bowie State teammate Jeff Hernandez. Claiborne sat out his 2010 sophomore because of NCAA transfer eligibility rules and played in four games last season as a reserve safety. He saw his first action against Florida State and also saw action against Notre Dame, Wake Forest and N.C. State in the season finale. He finished the season with three total tackles and one solo tackle.

Expectations for 2012: Matt Robinson is the Terps' choice at the starting strong safety position, but Claiborne could see more playing time this season as Robinson's backup. Claiborne has good speed and can keep up with receivers in the open field who have lost their primary defender. Freshman Sean Davis could make a push for some of Claiborne's playing time, but the coaching staff may look toward Claiborne's experience as their backup at strong safety.
