Meet the Terps Defense: #8 Brock Dean

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Brock Dean

Hometown: Harrisburg, Pa.

Class: Freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot-0, 210 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup linebacker

The rundown: Dean was a highly recruited linebacker from Pennsylvania and helped lead his high school to two straight state championship games, though his school, Bishop McDevitt, lost both games. He was an all-state selection in high school twice and finished his senior year with 92 tackles, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one pass breakup and one interception. He has played all the linebacker positions in high school but will play one of the middle linebacker positions in the Terps' new 3-4 defense.

Expectations for 2012: Dean was told by Maryland head coach Randy Edsall that he could be a four-year starter. He is listed behind Demetrius Hartsfield and Bradley Johnson at the “Mo” linebacker position, which he plays the best, but if he is to start next season, it may be at the “Mike” position over L.A. Goree and Cole Farrand, both young players with not as much experience as Hartsfield. Dean could redshirt his freshman year, which may be the best option for him if he wants to become a four-year starter.
