Meet the Terps Defense: #9 Makinton Dorleant

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Makinton Dorleant

Hometown: Naples, Fla.

Class: Redshirt Freshman

Height & Weight: 5-foot-11, 180 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup cornerback

The rundown: Dorleant is a second-year player who brings speed to the cornerback position. He redshirted last season and earned special teams scout player of the week before the game against Virginia. In his senior year at Lely High, Dorleant missed four games with an injury, but had 42 tackles, 14 pass breakups, one interception, one fumble recovery and two blocked field goals. He missed spring training while recovering from a knee surgery.

Expectations for 2012: Dorleant needs to be able to stay healthy going forward after having a history of injuries. If he can fully recover from his offseason knee operation, Dorleant will be able to add some depth to a very thin cornerback position. Dexter McDougle has a pretty firm grip on the starting cornerback position, but Dorleant could find some playing time next season. He is listed behind McDougle and A.J. Hendy on the preseason depth chart, but with the lack of corners, Dorleant may be called upon more than he expects.
