Meet the Terps Defense: #10 Darin Drakeford

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Darin Drakeford

Hometown: Washington, D.C.

Class: Senior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-0, 180 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Starting linebacker

The rundown: Drakeford is a talented, athletic linebacker also equipped with fast speed and good tackling abilities. Drakeford was a starter at the outside linebacker position last season, starting eight games and missing four due to an injury. He finished last year with 68 tackles, 42 solo tackles, one sack, one interception, one fumble recovery and a team-high four forced fumbles. In his first start against Miami, Drakeford had a career-high 14 tackles and 11 solo tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. In the season finale against N.C. State, Drakeford had 11 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Expectations for 2012: The starting linebackers are looking very solid for next season and Drakeford is a solid addition to the group. Drakeford will most likely get the start at the “Will” linebacker position over Marcus Whitfield, Clarence Murphy and Roman Braglio, an obvious choice given his resume and his talent at the position. Maryland head coach Randy Edsall said he really likes his linebacker corps for next year and if Drakeford can stay healthy, it is not at all unreasonable to expect him to put up better numbers than he did last season.
