Meet the Terps Defense #14 Isaac Goins

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Isaac Goins

Hometown: Hercules, Calif.

Class: Junior

Height & Weight: 6-foot-0, 185 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup cornerback

The rundown: Goins is an athletic player that adds some depth to a thin cornerback group. Goins is a transfer from Contra Costa College, a junior college where he was a first team All-Bay Valley Conference choice last season after recording six interceptions. He was a starter his entire freshman season in 2010 and finished with 36 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass breakups. Goins will have two years of eligibility with the Terps.

Expectations for 2012: With the Terps lacking quality corners next season, Goins could potentially end up getting a decent amount of playing time. He will be competing with Jeremiah Johnson for the cornerback spot opposite of Dexter McDougle but Johnson is more likely to end up with the spot barring any surprises in training camp. Goins is a solid player and can contribute to a secondary that found itself burned by opposing offenses on many occasions. He should see the field as a cornerback next season regardless of whether he wins the starting spot and could also get playing time as a punt returner on special teams.
