Meet the Terps Defense: #27 Avery Thompson

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Avery Thompson

Hometown: Chesapeake, Va.

Class: Freshman

Height & Weight: 6-foot-2, 205 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup linebacker

The rundown: Thompson was one of the top prospects out of the state of Virginia last season and now finds himself in a position to get some playing time this season. In his senior year, Thompson helped lead his school to a 10-2 record and was an honorable all-state selection. He finished the 2011 season with 75 tackles, 35 solo tackles, five sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

Expectations for 2012: Thompson will have a chance to see the field in his freshman year with the injury to Kenny Tate bumping Thompson from the third linebacker to the backup for Alex Twine. Thompson may not get too many snaps after Tate returns but could also contribute on special teams and could still get some plays on defense to keep Tate from seeing too much action and getting injured again.
