Meet the Terps Defense: #28 Alex Twine

College Park, MD. - TSR gets you acclimated with the 2012 Terps by taking a look at the defense.

Player: Alex Twine

Hometown: Gaithersburg, Md.

Class: Sophomore

Height & Weight: 6-foot-2, 205 pounds

Projected Position on Depth Chart: Backup linebacker

The rundown: Twine is a very athletic linebacker who ended last year as one of the starting linebackers. He played in 11 games last season and started four, averaging 9.8 tackles in his four starts. In his first start against Clemson, Twine recorded eight tackles including one assisted tackle for loss. Against Notre Dame, Twine set career highs in tackles with 12, solo tackles with seven, tackles for loss with three and sacks with one. Twine also had nine tackles and a season-high three pass breakups in the season finale against N.C. State.

Expectations for 2012: With Kenny Tate out, Twine will get the start against William & Mary in the season opener and will continue to start until Tate is fully healthy. Twine has experience as a starter for the Terps and is a very capable player. When Tate returns, Twine will see his snaps decrease, but he will still be able to contribute on defense and also on special teams if the coaching staff decides to play him there. An arrest last season concerns some, but Twine has done a good job of staying out of trouble since.
