2013 Offensive Lineman Hopeful for MD Offer

Brett Steverson could be yet another addition to a lineman-heavy Maryland class.

Offensive lineman Brett Steverson has picked up offers from Troy, Colorado State, and Duke, but the 2013 prospect is still hopeful to get an offer from Maryland.

The Georgia native has visited South Carolina, Florida, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and plans on taking a visit to Florida State, but is not yet sure when he will see the College Park campus.

“It could happen,” Steverson said of a Maryland visit. “I've talked to Coach Brattan and he likes me a lot, so some things may happen there.”

Steverson said that his relationship with Maryland picked up over the summer when he got an opportunity to talk to Maryland's Offensive Line Coach Tom Brattan. Though he plays at the tackle position for his Fitzgerald High School team, he said Maryland is recruiting him at another position.

“[Brattan] thought I'd fit in as a guard,” Steverson said. “He doesn't know if I'm a pass blocker or run blocker, but in [my team's] offense, I pull and trap, and [Maryland] likes to pull and trap, so I think it'd be a good fit.”

Steverson's size (6'5”, 300 lbs.) and versatility have made him a notable recruiting prospect so far, and he said that he's still trying to improve on that skill set.

“Last year, I would've said [my style is] smash-mouth, pound [the] football,” Steverson said. “But our new coach put new things in, and we spread it out, do a lot of jet sweep and rocket, so I get out and block in space a lot more. I've improved greatly in space.”

The young offensive lineman's familiarity with the Maryland program has largely come through word-of-mouth and television broadcasts, but that hasn't limited his interest.

“If [Maryland] offered, playing in that conference would be awesome,” Steverson said. “I'd be very intrigued; I've been hoping they pull the trigger for a while now.”

Since 2013 offensive lineman Moise Larose recently switched his commitment from Rutgers to Maryland, the Terps now have four offensive linemen in the fold for next season. Only time will tell if they decide to go after Steverson as well.
