Maryland still in the picture of for Holmes

The Norfolk, Va. prospect will start by looking at eight schools, which includes Maryland.

The recruiting battle for Scout's 13th-ranked defensive end in the 2014 class is sure to heat up in the coming months, but for now, Jalyn Holmes is starting relatively small.

The four-star recruit said that he would start taking unofficial visits to schools in February. Right now, Holmes is focused on eight schools: Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Southern California, Virginia Tech, and Florida State.

The current list is nearly half of his prior 15, but he emphasizes that this list is not final.

“It's not my top eight or the final eight schools that I'm looking at,” Holmes said. “I just made it the schools that I'm focusing on now.”

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound defensive end is currently not allowed to meet with coaches, but he has been regularly communicating with Maryland and other schools through Facebook.

Holmes is still not playing favorites at this moment in time, and he is looking to further develop his current list for the future before getting closer to his final decision.

“I think I will add two or three more schools before the summertime comes,” he said. “After the summertime, I'll just break it all down to five or three and that would be my final list.”

When it comes to on-the-field matters, the junior from Lake Taylor High School said that he wants to improve on defending the run, but added that working on his overall game is his primary goal going into his senior year.
