Maryland Routs Quinnipiac, 72-52

Maryland overcomes a slow start to beat Quinnipiac on Saturday and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Alyssa Thomas had 29 points and 13 rebounds as No. 4 seed Maryland defeated No. 13 seed Quinnipiac, 72-52 on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Both teams struggled to get started early on, but Quinnipiac hit three straight unanswered 3-point shots to take a nine-point lead in the first half. The Terrapins closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 27-23 lead at the break. Maryland picked up where they left off at halftime, dominating the second half. Tianna Hawkins had 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Alicia DeVaughn chipped in 8 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for Maryland, which will face the winner of the Marist-Michigan State game on Monday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. Felicia Barron scored 13 points for Quinnipiac, the Northeast Conference champions, which made its debut in the NCAA women's tournament on Saturday. The loss ended the most successful season in program history for the Bobcats, who finished with a record of 30-3.
