Maryland's red-white spring game on April 12 drew a crowd of over 8,000 fans as well as a host of the Terps' top prospects. One of those in attendance was St. John's Prep (Danvers, Mass.) running back Johnathan Thomas, who made the long trek down for his second visit to College Park.
"I really enjoyed myself," Thomas said. "Maryland definitely has a great football atmosphere."
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Thomas visited Maryland back in January, but this April 12 visit proved to be an eye opening one for the Massachusetts running back.
"This trip was different because I got to be around all the players," Thomas said. "I got to see and ask questions to all the players, and they were honest. They aren't just going to tell you what you want to hear."
After the game, Thomas spent Friday night on campus with Maryland running back Albert Reid and his roommate Abner Logan.
"Definitely staying over night was great, I got a real feel for the school, that helps me a lot," Thomas said. "I learned that to enjoy it, you have to picture yourself there and ask if you will be happy there for the next four years. I really think I would be happy there.
"The campus was really nice," he continued. "The people were nice to the football players, and the football payers are kind of like stars there and that's something that I like."
Thomas said he has a great relationship with Maryland's coaching staff and talks to his recruiter, Keith Dudzinski, as well as running backs coach Andre Powell regularly on Facebook.
"They said I would fit in right with those guys, and I can definitely compete to get playing time," Thomas said. "I feel like I could play with those guys; they are definitely great running backs and I see myself as a great running back too."
In addition to catching up with Dudzinski and Powell, Thomas also spent some time during his visit talking to Maryland head coach Randy Edsall.
"Coach Edsall said out of all the running back they are recruiting I am their No. 1 guy," said Thomas, who also holds offers from UMass, Connecticut and Boston College. "They said that [I am their No. 1 guy] because I have all he characteristics of a running back that fits the system at Maryland."
Although he was really impressed with Maryland, Thomas is not ready to make a decision yet. That said, two schools are standing out.
"Maryland is among the top of my list," Thomas said. "Right now it's probably Maryland and Boston College at the top."
Thomas also has a visit to Boston College on deck and is also considering trips to Arkansas and Wisconsin. In the meantime, Thomas is hitting the weight room this offseason while doing speed training and lifting to improve his speed.
