2014 St. John's College High (Washington, D.C.) point guard Tre Campbell had a very busy day on Monday. After spending the weekend playing in the EYBL Los Angeles (Ca) AAU Tournament over the weekend, Campbell had a full day of school followed by four hours of SAT Prep. Sandwiched in all of those activities was some pretty exciting news.
"Today Coach Turgeon came to my school and he said they were offering me a scholarship," said Campbell. "I was excited when he said it. I kind of smiled a little; it was really nice to know they want me."
Campbell did not get a chance to watch too many of Maryland's games this year because of his own basketball season, however he did manage to make it out to one game.
"I went to the game when they played North Carolina," Campbell said. "I'm not going to lie, I used to be a North Carolina fan growing up, but Maryland was great and the fans were great. I really enjoyed the game."
While Campbell may not have seen too many of Maryland's games this year, he did catch the Terps playing with some four and five guard lineups towards the end of the season.
"That is kind of like my team St John's, we play a lot of guards too, sometimes we play 4 guards or even 5 guards," Campbell said. "So it was cool to see Maryland doing that too and I know coach Turgeon was saying he loves guards."
Turgeon does love guards and if the 6-foot-2, 170-pound Campbell needs any proof he doesn't have to look much further than his own AAU team.
"I am really close with Dion Wiley and Phil Booth, they are always telling how the Maryland fans are great and I see all the Maryland fans on their twitter," said Campbell, who plans to visit College Park again sometime in June. "Since Maryland offered me, I at least I am already feeling the love from Terp Nation, I have like 10-12 new followers that are just Maryland fans."
Campbell describes himself as a pass first point guard that can knock down a shot when he needs to and who is also a solid defender.
Campbell's well-rounded skill set is attracting attention from schools such as: Florida State, Tennessee, Xavier and Georgetown. His offer list is now getting close to double-digits.
So what is Campbell looking for in a school?
"I'm looking for academics first then somewhere where my parents can come to my games without having to travel too far," said Campbell. "I also want a school with a good fan base and I know Maryland does."
