Nassau -- Sophomore forward Jake Layman poured in a team-high 25 points to lead Maryland to a 92-84 victory over the Bahama All-Stars on Tuesday night at Sir Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.
Layman was one of four Terps to score in double figures. Junior guard/forward Dez Wells, who was named to the ACC All-Tournament team last March, had 22 points, nine rebounds and a number of electrifying slam dunks in Maryland's eight-point win.
Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon was pleased with the effort considering it was the Terps' first competitive game since their NIT Final Four appearance against Iowa last April.
"We played hard the entire game," Turgeon said. "It was a good challenge for our team because we saw a lot of different defenses - zone, man-to-man and full-court pressure. They tried to keep us off balance, so it was a good test for us."
Junior forward Evan Smotrycz, a transfer from Michigan, posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Seth Allen chipped in with 11 points and junior Nick Faust had 10 points, six assists and six rebounds in the win.
The Terps' victory was even more impressive considering Maryland was whistled for 33 team fouls.
"We experienced a lot of different things tonight together as a team," Turgeon added. "We had some different lineups because of the early foul trouble. But this provided us an opportunity for many of our guys to get valuable minutes."
Nine players saw action for the Terps, including a pair of freshman: forward Damonte Dodd and guard Roddy Peters.
This marked the first of three games the Terps will participate in this week during their Foreign Tour in the Bahamas.
Maryland will play the Commonwealth Giants today (Tuesday) at 7 p.m.
Notes: Junior guard Varun Ram, who walked on at Maryland last fall, came off the bench on Tuesday night ... Maryland arrived in the Bahamas on Monday afternoon ... Prior to leaving for the Foreign Tour, Turgeon said he held nine of his NCAA-mandated 10 summer practices and did not plan to schedule a final practice ... Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, who is vacation in the Bahamas, attended the Terps' game on Tuesday evening.
