Turgeon Says UMD Making Strides After UNI Win
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Maryland junior Evan Smotrycz had a career-high 20 points and sophomore Jake Layman added 19 as the Terps beat Northern Iowa 80-66 in the semifinal round of the 2013 Paradise Jam Tournament on Sunday at the University of the Virgin Islands.
With the win, Maryland advances to the championship game at 10 p.m. Monday night when they will face the winner of the second semifinal game between LaSalle/Providence.
Four Terps scored in double figures, including Smotrycz, Layman, Dez Wells (16 points) and Nick Faust (17 points). Maryland forced 14 Northern Iowa turnovers, including nine steals, and out-rebounded the Panthers 37-33.
Forward Seth Tuttle had 19 points to lead Northern Iowa, while guard Deon Mitchell chipped in 13.
