The Terps are back in Ohio recruiting again, this time looking hard at 6-foot-7, 210-pound junior forward Kipper Nichols, from St. Edward HS in Lakewood, a suburb of Cleveland. Nichols talked to Terrapin Times on June 24, and he gave us a rundown on his game and recruitment.

"I'm mainly being recruited as a three-man, a small forward," said Nichols, a very well spoken young man who had just completed a day of working at a local basketball camp. "I'm really good off the dribble, and up until the past few months, I've been known as a guy who can create shots and knock them down from mid-range. But I have worked extremely hard at extending my game, and now I feel really comfortable from behind the 3-point line. I'm a solid defender and a very good athlete. I feel like my best basketball is still ahead of me."

Nichols, who plays for the King James Shooting Stars AAU program, has several more events lined up for July.

"We (King James) didn't qualify for the Peach Jam, but we'll be playing in Louisville in the Super Showcase," said Nichols. "I'm also going to be in the D.C. area for the Ty Lawson/Victor Oladipo Camp which is being held at DeMatha, which I think is July 9. I have some nice offers now, but am hoping to get a lot more after the July live period."

Nichols then gave us a close look at his recruitment as it now stands.

"I've got firm offers from Penn State, Xavier, Dayton and Minnesota," said Nichols. "I've taken unofficials to Penn State and Xavier, and am setting one up with Northwestern as well. There's a real long list of schools that are showing strong interest, and I expect a good number of them to offer in the next month or so."

Among those being mentioned with Nichols are Cincinnati, Ohio State, Clemson, Wisconsin, and St. Joseph's.

The latest school to make contact is Maryland, who let it be known of its interest in the past week.

"I talked to Coach Bino (Ranson) a couple days ago, and he let it be known that they will be watching me very closely in July," said Nichols. "I know they are going to the Big Ten, and that's a conference I am really interested in.

"If Maryland offers, I am pretty sure I will want to take an official visit there. I know they were in the ACC which is a great conference, and now they're going to another big time league. So yeah, I am definitely interested."

Nichols had mainly mid-major schools on him prior to a breakout season for St. Edward. But he's played very well on the Nike circuit, and his stock seems to be going up steadily on a national basis.
