COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- This up-and-coming Gilman School (Baltimore, Md.) defensive lineman liked the look and feel of Maryland's first 'Big Show' football one-day camp June 28.
"It was good. The atmosphere, the tempo," said 2018 defensive lineman Cam Spence. "What jumped out was the coaches. They helped you if they saw you were struggling. They would come up and talk to you."
The 6-foot-1, 280-pounder worked with Terps defensive line coach Chad Wilt.
"Mostly we just worked on pass rushing, dropping the shoulder down," Spence said. "And then seeing the players out here, and the guys who are already committed here, that was good, it was cool."
Spence has enjoyed a busy summer, with trips already to Tennessee, South Carolina, NC State, Michigan State and Ohio State. He said his offers are NC State and Michigan so far.
On the Terps he said:
"My thoughts are good on Maryland. And it will be interesting to see how they turn out to be in the Big Ten," Spence said.
He said he may be close to landing a Terps offer, "and they tell me to keep working and they will be continuing to talk to me."
This coming season will be his first on varsity at Gilman.
"I think we will do well this year and I hope I will start. I am working on my get-off the most now," Spence said.
Spence is athletic and runs a 4.9-second 40 yard dash.
Spence said the rest of his summer will be dedicated to working out with the team at Gilman.
On what, if anything, separated what he had seen at Maryland versus the other schools, he said:
"Well, when the announcers called the coaches out on the field and [Chad Wilt and Keenan McCardell] started dancing, that was cool," Spence said with a smile. "And Coach Edsall told us all good work today, he liked the players, and he introduced his commitment class to us. It was a fun day."
The Gilman underclass ranks are full of promising prospects, especially line talents like Spence, the Terps will be keeping tabs on for several years to come.
