HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- While many of the Nike "bluebloods" were in Las Vegas this week, there was plenty of solid Division I talent in action at the Ty Lawson & Victor Oladipo All-American Camp, held at DeMatha Catholic HS. Here are some quick thoughts after watching two days of action about a number of kids...some Terps targets and some not.
Justin Robinson (St. James School, Md.): He's not a "wow you" type player, but fundamentally sound all day long. Robinson lends structure to whatever program lands him.
Kevin Dorsey (TBD):It sounds like a decision is coming soon....real soon. Maryland, Minnesota and Nebraska are his top three, with the Gophers and Terps the favorites. Minnesota has been on him a long time, and my gut tells me that's where he winds up. Others say it will be Maryland. If he wants to come, it would be hard for the Terps to say no, or "can you wait awhile?"
Kipper Nichols (St. Edward HS/Lakewood, Ohio): Another very solid, sound basketball player, who has it all together on the court and in the classroom. Nichols has an offer, but my sense is that there are others ahead of him right now if you're Maryland.
Chris Clarke- (Cape Henry Collegiate)- It appears based on what Clarke is saying, and from what we've heard elsewhere, that Maryland is back on Clarke, as they should be. He's had a tremendous camp. But the question beckons....is it too late?
Corey Manigault (Paul VI/Faifax, Va.): Manigault is the rising junior at Paul VI, who's up to 6-8 now, and still growing. It hasn't all come together just yet, but this is one of a very few kids in the local DMV class of 2016 that Maryland will be monitoring very closely.
Drew Edwards (Calvert Hall/Towson, Md.): We like Edwards' game a lot, but have no problem with the Terps not pursuing him with a great deal of energy. He's still a combo guard for the most part, and did not play well at this camp.
Josh Reaves (Oak Hill/Mouth of Wilson, Va.): The Terps appear to have backed off Reaves prior to his poppage to Penn State, and we are more than OK with that. Reaves still has some holes in his game, though he brings a ton of energy to the court. He's sort of stuck between 2G/SF right now, and looking ahead, he can develop well at PSU. It will be interesting to see how he does at Oak Hill, where the talent level is impressive every year.
Franklin Howard (Paul VI): Howard, 6-5, is back after overcoming his ACL injury. There is no denying his talent, but we're not sure at all he's equipped to play the point as he has suggested he wants to. Syracuse, though, will have a nice defensive guard up front in their zone.
D.J. Harvey (DeMatha Catholic): Harvey was one of only two 2017 class members at the camp, and he held his own, despite some problems while guarded by Clarke. He's 6-5, skilled, and fairly athletic. There' no telling when, or if, Maryland will land a Stag anytime soon, but Harvey certainly is high up on the radar.
Christian Matthews (National Christian Academy/Clinton, Md.):The Terps took a look at Matthews earlier, but he's more of a mid-major prospect as we see it. He's a decent athlete, and shoots it OK, but doesn't appear to have a high-major arsenal of skills just yet.
Randall Broddie (Potomac/Oxon Hill, Md.): Broddie is listed as a 2016 member now, and the kid has a lot of talent. There's been some buzz about whether the Terps will go after him; I'd say probably not. Broddie, 6-2, is playing the point now, but is a natural scorer. At this point, local guards Anthony Cowan (St. John's/Washington, D.C.) and Curtis Jones (TBD) appear to be a few notches higher on the board.
