Baltimore senior point guard John Crosby has had his fair share of Terps of late.
Crosby, who played at both City and Poly high schools before opting for a prep school year this coming fall at New Hampton School (New Hampton, N.H.), has known Terps assistant coach Bino Ranson for most of his basketball life. He's been to several Terps games on campus throughout the years, and just this month the Terps, after scouting him during the live period in Georgia, got in touch with Crosby in earnest about his recruitment.
In fact, as he prepared to board his flight to Las Vegas July 23, none other than Ranson was on his flight as he embarked on the next stage of the July open period with Baltimore-based Team Melo.
Crosby, the 6-foot-2 lead guard whose stock has soared this spring and summer and is now on the Terps' radar, was ecstatic about the new developments with him and Maryland.
"They got in touch with me like two days ago. I came back from Atlanta and on my way back I heard from them. They said they like how I have been playing this month and to continue what I am doing and they will be looking at me," Crosby said. "Coach Bino, he has been around for a long time now, I have known him forever. He has just been watching my progress, said I did well this weekend, and said the way I have been playing he has been proud of me."
Crosby said Maryland is the school he long followed coming up in Charm City as a hoopster.
"Definitely the hometown school. I love it. I'm a Terps fan," Crosby said.
So far, his offer list consists of SMU, VCU, Rhode Island and Quinnipiac. Others in touch include Maryland, Butler, Tennessee, Providence and Rutgers, among others.
"If Maryland were to offer me, well I would definitely be excited about that....you know, Big Ten basketball, hometown....I just got a lot of love for Maryland," Crosby said.
Going back, he's been to Terps games seeing such Baltimore standouts over the years like Sean Mosley and Nick Faust, who he followed as a youth coming up.
"I have been going up there a long time, to see all those guys. Growing up a Terps fan, watching those guys, and being on campus makes me feel good, very comfortable," Crosby said. "When I get back from the [July period] I am sure I will get up to campus and talk with Coach Bino, meet with Coach [Mark] Turgeon, I will be checking things out."
Crosby, a playmaker with a great handle and vision and average shooting range, said he game has simply matured this spring/summer session.
"Just I am more comfortable now. Real comfortable playing at a high level. I am used to it, the game has slowed down for me, I have gotten older and more mature," Crosby said.
He leaves for New Hampton on Sept. 6.
"Just to better myself, get ready for school, for college," Crosby said of the extra year.
He said he averaged some 16 points per game and eight assists a game at Poly last season.
"I am a pass-first kind of point guard," Crosby said of his style. "I know the game, I get my teammates involved."
Crosby said he hopes to decide on a college by November. He said SMU and Maryland are jumping out, as well as VCU. He said he hopes to see as many of them as possible in the fall on official visits.
The Terps will undoubtedly be scouting him in Vegas, determining whether to take the next step in his recruitment with an offer. With point guard a priority in the next class, he is another name to add to the Terps list of 3-4 candidates on the board, led by Justin Robinson of St. James (Md.).
