National Hoops Festival Eval: Anthony Cowan

Here is an evaluation of point guard Anthony Cowan from the National High School Hoops Festival at DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.)

Player: Anthony Cowan
School: St. John's (Washington, D.C.)
Position: PG
Height: 5-10
Class: 2016

Cowan had a huge effort against Largo High School (Upper Marlboro, Md.), racking up 27 points, while sending the game into overtime at the buzzer -- and then winning it in the extra session as time expired.

This quick floor leader has long been on Maryland's radar, and for good reason. While small, Cowan has really filled out physically, and now is much more adept at drawing fouls and finishing in traffic. The Bowie, Md., native thrives in the open court and at a faster tempo, where he can blow by opponents with his explosive first step. Cowan is a solid three-point shooter, and plays with plenty of passion.

Cowan's defense has improved due to his improved strength, and he has the reputation of being a diligent worker who wants to be a great player. Most evaluators consider him to be a top 100 recruit, with the potential of moving up the lists.

As for his recruitment, it looks like Maryland and Georgetown head the list, with Florida State, Miami, Penn State, Xavier and others in the mix. The Terps are involved with a number of points in the Class of 2016, and some are rated a bit higher, but they will be hard pressed to turn down this entertaining and effective local star if he wants to come. Anthony Cowan's very good, and seems to be getting better each time we see him.
