Baltimore Tip-Off Classic Eval:Jamall Gregory

Here is an evaluation of wing Jamall Gregory from the Baltimore Tip-Off Classic at St. Frances (Baltimore, Md.)

Player: Jamall Gregory
School: Elev8 Prep (Delray Beach, Fla.)
Position: SG/SF
Height: 6-4
Class: 2015

Terrapin Times scouted Gregory two years ago while he was still attending Bishop O'Connell HS (Arlington, Va.). He played his senior year at Coolidge in D.C., and now is prepping at Elevate 8, so he's been around.

Here's the bottom line with Gregory: I've said the Terps, with Dez Wells graduating, lack a true wing warrior, someone who can make hustle plays, excite the crowd, and change momentum. If you're looking for that type player, a "junkyard dog" who guards like crazy and finishes over the rim, then Gregory's your guy.

Athletically, Gregory falls in the "elite" category. He's got a solid body, he runs very well, and his hops are ridiculous. We saw him nail a trey, and make his free throws against Mt. Zion Prep (Baltimore, Md.), but he's not known as a great shooter for the most part. However, he showed us that he won't try to do things he's not capable of. Off the break, he made sound decisions, and went to the rim when the opportunity was there. Gregory had several dunks that simply made you say, "wow." Yes, he's that kind of athlete.

It should be noted as well that Gregory is one tough cookie. He guards with a vengeance, and it's safe to say he plays with a chip on his shoulder. We suspect he'll have interest from all levels of colleges, but again, athletically, he can more than hold his own against anyone. The skill levels aren't great, but they're more than adequate.

It's not known how serious Maryland is about Gregory, but Mark Turgeon certainly has seen him up close and personal, and our feeling is that any recruit who fills a need is a quality get. The Terps could certainly use someone like Gregory in their program.
