Stafford (Texas) defensive tackle Josh Uluocha has been committed to Texas State since August, but as Signing Day approaches Feb. 4, the 6-foot-3, 255-pounder has started to generate increased interest from a couple higher-level FBS programs. Uluocha said assistants from Maryland and Purdue visited Stafford Jan. 20-21 and suggested late offers could materialize.
“Right now I’m committed to Texas State, but if a better opportunity comes up, I’ll take a look at it,” said Uluocha, who also holds offers from Army and Texas-San Antonio. “There are other schools trying to get involved like Maryland and Purdue. They haven’t offered yet, but it’s possible they will. I just started talking to each of them.”
Terps assistant Keenan McCardell has been active in his native Lone Star State since the open period resumed. He’s identified a number of late potential Maryland targets, with Uluocha being the most recent -- and perhaps most likely to give UMD a long look.
“Coach McCardell came to meet with my head coach at my school, and then we spoke,” Uluocha said. “He said they need linemen and it’s possible for me to come in and contribute. He was saying how he likes the way I play, how I go hard, my explosiveness, my hands, stuff like that. [McCardell] was saying he was going to get back to me about an offer after he talks to the rest of [the Maryland staff].”
Uluocha does not know much about College Park, Md., aside from the basics. He’s aware Maryland competes in the Big Ten, is connected with Under Armour and played in a bowl game this year.
“But besides that I don’t know much. But I do know some of their commits like Mbi Tanyi (Bush/Sugar Land, Texas) and Jameel Cook (Ride Point/Missouri City, Texas),” Uluocha said. “I’ve spoken to both of those guys a lot, because I’ve known them since little league football. We don’t really talk about Maryland or anything, but it would be nice to play with them again. It would be a good opportunity.”
Of course, that is predicated on Uluocha actually pulling an offer.
“I can’t say for sure, but I think the chances are strong I get the offer,” Uluocha said. “Coach McCardell was talking about me visiting there, but for me to go visit them, I’d have to have the offer. So we’ll see what happens. I think the chances [of the scholarship materializing] are good.”
Uluocha also said he could pull the offer from Purdue as well. He said a Boilermakers’ assistant intimated “basically the same thing” as McCardell, letting him know Purdue’s need for linemen and his chance to make an impact in the program.
“But, again, we’ll just have to see with [Purdue]. That’s a school I might consider visiting as well, but I’d have to have the offer,” Uluocha said.
Uluocha has not taken any official visits yet, but has his first Jan. 23 to Texas State. He said it’s possible, if he truly enjoys himself, he could shut down his recruitment altogether following the trip. If not, however, he’ll have one weekend left to officially visit either Maryland or Purdue.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Texas State and having a good time,” Uluocha said. “Just getting to know the players, the coaches and learning more about the program. It’s a good fit for me, and close to home. Right now I’m on board with them.”
Uluocha said he projects as a defensive tackle in college. He played in a 4-3-5 scheme at Stafford, lining up primarily on the line’s interior and recording five sacks in the process.
