Maryland defeated Indiana Feb. 11, 68-66. After the game, Terps head coach Mark Turgeon addressed the media:
First of all that was a great college basketball game for our team. Give Indiana a lot of credit, they were terrific, played well, Yogi was obviously good. I thought down the stretch we really executed, whether it was Jake [Layman], Melo [Trimble], Dez [Wells] making a play for us, Jared Nickens hitting a shot, 5 of 6 from the foul line, our press offense was great, and our defense is getting better. They made some really tough shots, but we held them to 37 percent and our rebounding is getting better.
Our kids are resilient. A lot more resilient than their coach. All of a sudden the world is coming to an end, we get hammered, plane troubles coming back, it took us forever to get home... and the kids are resilient, much more than their coach. They stepped up and got another close win for us.
On Yogi Ferrell's last shots
First one went up, it was gutsy, I'm thinking, 'Alright, they're trying to win it.'He was probably the most open guy to be honest with you. He played a lot of minutes, had a lot on his plate, and I was hoping he'd miss it. I'm like every other fan in the building, saying, 'Miss, I hope it goes off to the side.' ... But our guys played good defense and time ran out on [Indiana]. You gotta get a stop. I don't care how you do it -- gotta get a stop.
On Trimble, the difference in his improved play the last two games
He's being aggressive. I don't want to make an excuse for him, but Melo was playing hurt for about three games. He's getting better, we're getting really healthy. Dez is better, and Evan [Smotrycz] isn't wearing that thing on his thumb anymore. So Melo is healthy. The last game [against Indiana] their guy [Yogi Ferrell] got the best of him. So Melo was pretty fired to come out and compete. I thought Melo defensively was pretty good on [Ferrell] and Yogi just made some incredible shots. What a great game.
On What Was Discussed After Recent Rough Stetch
This win feels great. Our message Sunday night [Feb. 8] was, 'What are you going to do to make your teammates better?' We got off the bus at 1 o'clock of whatever time it was and said, 'What are you going to do to make your teammates better?' When we met as a team,we talked about senses of urgency. We have guys in the room that are seniors, have seven regular season games left. So let's have a sense of urgency, practice great -- we've been practicing great for about 10 days now so eventually it's going to click into the games. But sense of urgency, making your teammates better ... and our guys were dialed in and ready to play.
On whether It feels good to play well after lackluster games
I think you have to give Penn State and Northwestern a lot of credit in those games. I think defensively we weren't great against Northwestern... But a win is a win, man. It's hard to win, man. You're going to go through phases where you're not playing at a high level. ... So it's good to see us play well, and I think it started in the second half of the Iowa game. We shared the ball, got on them pretty good, and tonight [Feb. 11] I thought we were really good. And we had to be. That's a heck of a team [Indiana]. What a league.
On win spurring the team
I hope so. I thought we played that way tonight. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Focus in, guys are feeling better. I feel like we're getting better. Our execution was better, we're tough to guard. So I hope so. But this is a tough week. We have three games in six days, two on the road. It's a tough week. We have to get [the players] out of here so they can go to school, get to class, and then get up to Penn State for [Feb. 14].
He looked like Evan Smotrycz. He hadn't looked like Evan at all this year. He was really happy in the locker room after the game. I'm happy for him. It's been a struggle. It's been a tough year. Defensively he was terrific, rebounding. Offensively, he executed and he gets all the guys in the right spots. So good for him.
On Yogi Ferrell's Performance
I just wish I could play like him. I wore his number, that's as close as I could get to his game (laughs). ... But Tom Crean goes over and picks him up after the game, because he knows how special the kid wants to get. He made a lot of shots. The first one, we're shaking hands, shot clock goes off, throws the ball about 30 feet in the air, swishes, and he never looks back after that. Our guy [Trimble] was pretty good too, but Yogi had to carry his team.
On Nickens Improvement
Jared shot, rebounded and defended. He hit a couple big 3s for us. I got on him at halftime a little bit, he didn't like it, and he responded. I subbed him in in the second half at the wing, and he responded. So it was good to see. I thought Jon Graham was good, Damonte [Dodd] protected the rim better than he had been. I thought a lot of guys played well, and they had to to win this game.
