Truman Thomas, of Southern High School in the Harwood area of Anne Arundel County, signed his Letter of Intent recently, and will soon be pitching for the Terps, his dream school ever since Brett Cecil was his neighbor early in his childhood.
Pitching from a three-quarters arm slot on the left side of the hill, the state of Maryland's No. 9 recruit posesses an effortless delivery, showing his mound presence, being calm, and showing no fear.
Truman easily reaches 85-88 mph on his fastball with excellent location, placing the ball around the plate with precision and timing. He sets up his opponents with accuracy on both sides of the dish, usually low and bordering the corners. Thomas is developing a slider in the 76-77 mph range and uses an occasional changeup to keep hitters on their toes.
Thomas is not an overpowering pitcher, as scouts may refer to him as a crafty righthander. However, if he can fill his 6-2 frame in the weight room, and take advantage of some excellent coaching, he may be able to add 5-6 mph to his repetoire. What he has going is a strong desire to succeed, and to help the club succeed in any way possible. Also, he is an excellent athlete who plays shortstop when not pitching.
Truman was very effective, especially with pitch location, especially keeping the ball at or below the knees consistently while changing speeds. He is cerebral on the mound, getting ahead in the counts and staying there. We only recall one ball leaving the infield during his entire outing. His defense was very active before each pitch, keeping everyone involved in the game.
Thomas's Terp career will be determined by the amount of effort he places in improving his craft. The tools, desire and heart are there for him to succed to the next level.
