Elizabeth (N.J.) receiver/safety Jahmin Muse called his most recent offer, his third to date, a “really cool coincidence.” See, on Feb. 15 the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder was chatting with his friend, and eventually their conversation turned to football and recruiting. Evidently, per Muse, his friend asked him what his favorite schools were.
“And I told him I had offers from Rutgers and Boston College, so they were two of my favorites, but I also really liked Maryland, but they hadn’t offered yet,” said Muse, who noted the Terps’ coaches want him at receiver. “But then not a day later I heard from Coach [Matt] Barnes at Maryland that I now had an offer from [the Terps]. So that was just really cool, that I was just talking about the Terps and then they come through with an offer.”
Muse said he heard from Barnes via Twitter on the evening of Feb. 16. A few minutes later, Muse gave the Maryland linebackers’ coach and Jersey area recruiter a call.
“Coach Barnes, I’d been talking to him for about a week, and he’s a really cool guy – a young guy,” Muse said. “And he told me that the staff watched my film, felt like I was a great player, felt like I was athletic, and that I fit into the offense they run. Then he said he wanted to offer me, and I told him, ‘Thank you,’ and it was an honor.”
So, why would Muse, who lives in Jersey and has never visited College Park, Md., before, count Maryland as an early favorite? Apparently he does have some loose connections to the school and likes the Old Line State in general.
“My mom’s best friend actually lives down near Maryland, and we go down there a lot to visit her. We were just down there in November,” Muse said. “I just love the area down there. I like the people, how they communicate with you, and just how it is there. It’s a good place to live, and I like that it’s not far from home.”
Besides its location, Muse admitted he didn’t know a whole lot about UMD yet. But he does like Barnes a good deal and wants to establish a rapport with him moving forward. Muse is also in the process of scheduling a visit to College Park, likely for a spring practice.
“I do know the founder of Under Armour went to Maryland, which I think is really cool. And Stefon Diggs, he went there too and now he’s with the Vikings. That’s also really cool,” Muse said. “So I’d say Maryland is one of my top choices.”
So is Rutgers, the hometown school holding plenty of appeal. Muse has been in Piscataway, N.J., on a few occasions, including a recent junior day.
“Rutgers is a really good school and Coach [Chris] Ash has a lot of great things in mind for the program. It’s my hometown school, my cousin actually went there, and I feel like they’re moving in the right direction,” Muse said. “I also like Temple a lot too. I’ve been to Temple a whole lot, and my cousin actually starts at quarterback there, so that’s a big school for me.”
Temple should be anteing up in short order. In addition, Muse has heard from Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska. The Jersey product said he’s looking for offers from the Nittany Lions and Badgers.
“Penn State and Wisconsin are two really big Big Ten schools,” said Muse, who mentioned he is being recruited on both sides of the ball and has offers for wideout and safety. “I love the Big Ten, and that’s my favorite conference.”
Muse is coming off a season where he rushed for 1,000 yards, had 600 receiving yards and scored 20 total touchdowns. He was named first-team all-conference and third-team all-state.
