After a couple false starts, Virginia offensive tackle Mekhi Becton (Highland Spring, Va.) target finally made it to College Park, Md., for his first look at the Terps March 28. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder, who added a UMD verbal Feb. 22 courtesy of offensive line coach Dave Borbely, said he had a great trip and now has Maryland among his foremost contenders.
“Maryland definitely stands close to the top. I had a great time there,” said Becton, who claims verbals from UMD, WVU, Cincinnati, UVA, ECU, MSU, Pitt, NC State and others. “I’d say Maryland, UVA and Pittsburgh stand out the most right now.”
Becton didn’t arrive in time for team practice, but he, along with his family, had a chance to tour the school and chat with a few coaches. The Virginia product counted the dorm renovations and the under-construction $150 million facility upgrades as highlights of the trip.
“It’s a great campus. It’s very nice up there,” Becton said. “The campus, the player dorms and the facilities stood out. I liked the dorm upgrades a lot. I talked to Coach Borbs and Coach [Mike] London; I’m in touch with both of them. They’re both on me and want me up there. I like them a lot, and I think they’re great coaches. We have a good relationship, and it was good to see them again.”
Becton actually knew both London and Borbely from when the two were at UVA. The recruit told us before that prior relationship would help Maryland’s chances at securing his services down the line.
“I connected with [Borbely and London] when they were at UVA,” Becton said before. “I know the Maryland staff pretty well because of that. We’re close.”
The Highland Springs product -- who mentioned previously UMD’s academics also stood out -- should be returning to College Park at some point, perhaps for the spring game April 16 and then a game during the fall. In the meantime, he plans to hit a few North Carolina programs, with ECU, NC State and UNC on the radar. He may also trek to Morgantown, W.Va., at some point in order to take a look at his most recent suitor, WVU.
Becton has already visited Pitt, UVA, Va Tech and UNC, in addition to Maryland. He is receiving interest from the Hokies and Heels, while Michigan, Florida State, Notre Dame and others are in touch as well. He’s hoping to add offers from the Wolverines and Hokies.
The three-star tackle does not plan to end his recruitment until later during the process, perhaps after his senior season.
