In our first TT ScoutCast, Dave Lomonico and Dan Painter talk about the state of Maryland hoops recruiting after the first two evaluation weekends. This particular discussion focuses on head coach Mark Turgeon's main 2017 targets and where the Terps stand with the likes of M.J. Walker, Jaren Jackson, Trevon Duval, Hamidou Diallo, Kris Wilkes, Nate Watson, Hameir Wright and others. It also touches on the most recent offers handed out to Brandon Randolph and Elias Harden, the incoming official visitor Nickeil Alexander-Walker, and how UMD's recruits performed on the AAU circuit this spring.
Since we couldn't include everything in the ScoutCast, here are some other notes after the first two AAU sessions:
-- Off camera, Painter and Lomonico talked about Duquesne 6-foot-7 power forward graduate transfer LG Gill, who will be visiting Maryland May 7. Gill, who is taking in Marquette April 29-30, seems to be leaning towards those two programs, as he's likely to commit shortly after seeing College Park, Md., per Painter. The feeling here is that Gill could very well wind up a Terp post-visit. Turgeon and assistant Dustin Clark have both been on the Virginia native in earnest, which makes sense considering Maryland's need for a big man.
Painter briefly recalled scouting Gill when he was at Benedictine in Chesterfield, Va., and though the forward wasn't considered a high-major recruit then, he's expanded his game considerably during his time at Dusquene. A forward who can step out and hit the 3 and score inside, along with guarding the paint and the perimeter, Gill averaged 10 points and six boards last year.
-- The backup option to Trevon Duval, Luis Hurtado (Sagemont/Weston, Fla.), remains somewhat in play, although the sense is he won't be a "take" for the Terps even if Turgeon is unable to land the five-star from Delaware.
-- Power forward Billy Preston (API/Dallas, Texas) and new big man offeree Brandon McCoy (Central Catholic/San Diego, Calif.) were not discussed, mainly because UMD is likely on the outside looking in for the two five-stars.
-- We did not touch on 2018 recruiting during this segment, but will delve into those recruits more in the next ScoutCast.
