It’s been quite an evaluation period for outside linebacker/defensive end Michael Scott (North Florida Christian/Tallahassee, Fla.). The 6-foot-3, 220-pound three-star has added about seven offers to a growing list that now includes about 30 colleges.
“It’s been pretty exciting,” said Scott, who counts verbals from Cal, Syracuse, Purdue, Syracuse, ECU, Louisville, Cincinnati, Illinois, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Southern Miss, Northwestern, USF, UCF, Temple, Utah and more. “A good amount of schools have come in, and it’s been exciting to see the coaches here for workouts, those that do offer and even those that don’t. It’s been a great time for me.”
Scott’s most recent look came in May 20 courtesy of Maryland-area recruiter Aazaar Abdul-Rahim. The Tallahassee native said Abdul-Rahim watched a work out, shook his hand and then let him know of said offer via Twitter later on.
“Coach Rahim and I have talked a little on Twitter and things. I’m going to be calling him so I can start building a relationship with him and learning more about Maryland,” Scott said. “I haven’t been able to do much research yet, though. All I know is Maryland’s a Big Ten school, which is a great conference, and they have new coaches there.”
One reason Scott said he wanted to visit College Park, Md., later during the summer is a pitch he heard from a friend. Qwuantrezz Knight (East Gadsden/Quincy, Fla.) signed with UMD in the 2016 class and evidently clued Scott in.
“Qwuantrezz and I actually trained together last summer and went to a few camps,” Scott said. “So we’ve been friends since then. He told me Maryland is where it’s at and he loved it up there. So I think I want to check it out. There’s a bunch of schools I’m seeing up North, so I’m trying to get to Maryland.”
In addition to UMD, Scott said he’s camping at Ohio State in hopes of culling out a Buckeyes’ offer. He’ll also hit Illinois, Syracuse, Memphis, Louisville and potentially a couple others.
“And I still have the offer from Cal and want to get out there too,” Scott said. “It’s kind of far, though, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to see it this summer. I might take an official visit there.”
Scott has already been to UCF, USF, Southern Miss, Utah. Of those, he said the UCF and Utah trips stood out.
“But no one is bursting to the front right now,” Scott said. “All the offers I have are pretty good schools. I can’t say at the moment any clear standouts. There’s still a good amount of schools I want to get to.”
The hybrid backer went on to detail what he’s looking for when he does visit these programs. He said first and foremost family feel was important, followed by the campus, the school itself, and then how he fits in with the players and coaches.
“I’m thinking if I see enough places I’ll be able to decide [on a school] in the summer before my senior season,” Scott said. “If not, I’ll do at the beginning of the fall if I need to take an official or two. I don’t want to drag my recruitment out too long.”
Scott actually just had his spring game at North Florida Christian. He said he lined up at a new spot too, inside linebacker.
“It’s just showing my versatility and how I can play different positions,” Scott said. “Most schools want me as an outside linebacker or defensive end, but you never know what can happen.”
