Big RB Brightwell Commanding Attention

BALTIMORE, Md. – St. Georges Tech (Middletown, Del.) running back Gary Brightwell didn’t secure the major offers he coveted during the spring evaluation period, but he certainly generated some interest. And now, with camp season in full swing, the 6-foot, 190-pounder’s name is starting to crop up in power-five circles.

“I haven’t gotten anymore offers, but schools like Va Tech, Syracuse, Maryland, Arizona and a couple more are showing interest,” said Brightwell, who holds a Temple offer, in addition to several I-AA looks. “So hopefully some of these schools come through for me. I’ve been working hard and doing well at these camps, so I’m hoping those offers are going to start to roll in.”

Most recently, Brightwell attended a satellite camp in Baltimore, Md., where he performed in front of staffers from Michigan; UMD; Cuse; and Wake Forest. Of those, he said the Orange and Terps’ coaches took notice.

“After that camp I called coaches from Syracuse and Maryland, and I’m really hoping for those two offers. Syracuse, I’m going up there for a camp if I can, and I’m definitely going to a Maryland camp June 18,” Brightwell said. “Maryland would be the big one for me, because that’s a school I’ve always liked.”

Indeed, Brightwell grew up about three hours from College Park, Md., in Delaware. He didn’t attend Terps’ games in his younger years, but he watched them on TV often enough.

“Maryland is like my favorite school. I’ve always dreamed of going there,” Brightwell said. “I love Under Armour, and I’m an Under Armour guy. Plus I loved their fancy uniforms, and red is my color. It’s close to home too, so my family could easily see me play.”

The Delaware back said he’s never formally visited UMD, although he has been through College Park. He said he’s excited to visit the school for the first time and participate in the camp.

“I just started getting in touch with Coach [Matt] Barnes the last couple days,” Brightwell said. “I sent him my highlight tape and we’ve been talking and he likes my game. He wants me to come to camp and show what I can do in front of the running backs coach [Anthony Tucker]. So I’m definitely going to do that.”

In addition to UMD, Brightwell’s hitting camps at Rutgers, Temple, Syracuse, Ohio State and a Va Tech satellite camp in Jersey. Besides Temple, though, Brightwell’s not sure which schools he’ll actually tour as he’s waiting to gauge the programs that are truly interested in his services.

“Temple stands out a lot to me right now,” Brightwell said. “I’ve been up there before and really liked the vibe. Plus it’s my biggest offer and the coaches are showing me love.”

Brightwell said he’s inclined to wait until after his senior season before he commits so he can have his film evaluated. That said, if the right offer pops up this summer, he could pledge on the spot.

“I think a lot of these college coaches just want to see me run. They tell me they like my film and they think I’m a good player, but they need to see me in person,” Brightwell said. “So once I do these camps, I think I’ll get some more offers. Hopefully they’ll come in here this summer and I’ll have some good options.”
