COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin addressed the media after the Terps' open practice Aug. 20.
On the scrimmage overall
It was good, I thought it was a good practice. We did a lot of situational stuff. We can always learn from it, the good and the bad. We did some things right, we made some mistakes that we shouldn’t have. We’ll go back and watch the film and learn from it, that’s the important thing.
But we kept it fun all day, we did a good job. It was a good day for us.
On Perry Hills interceptions
Yeah, one of them was probably a bad decision, one was a tipped ball – those things happen. But Perry’s a tough guy, he doesn’t get bothered about that stuff.
On Caleb Rowe, Gage Shaffer not participating
We held them out just for reasons. They need to get healthy, but they’ll be back practicing tomorrow.
On status of potential starting quarterback
I don’t know, we have to go back and watch the tape. I know everyone wants to judge us right now, but we’re down on the field and it’s tough. As a staff, we sit down and watch every play multiple times and we talk. I don’t have any ‘this is where this guy is at’ right now.
On J.C. Jackson pick
J.C.’s had a great camp, and he’s a great football player. We have to get him consistent with his technique; that’s something we’re working on him with. He’s a competitor, though, We’re happy to have him.
On LoLo Harrison
Yeah, he’s had a really good camp, and he’s tough to bring down and hard to tackle. He’s consistent and a really hard worker. He doesn’t act like a freshman, and that’s a good thing.
On freshmen playing this year
Sure, as many that can help us, they’re going to play.
On running back depth
Yeah, that’s a good problem. We have some depth there and some guys that can do a few different things. So, like I said, it’s a good problem to have.
On offensive system and scrambling QBs
That’s based on game plan and who’s back there. We have the ability to run the quarterback, doesn’t mean we always will. You have to be smart about it too. We’ll do it at times.
On kicking game with Adam Greene
Yeah, he’s been consistent and done a great job. We put Adam on scholarship, and he definitely has earned that.
On Alvin Hill
He’s been really consistent and he has a good way about him. He’s really focused. Like most seniors, he’s got his mind made up what he wants to do. He’s been a leader and he’s been focused. We expect big things from him.
On offensive line play
They’ve done a good job, Coach Borbs [Borbely] does a great job with those guys. And they have pretty good depth at that position too.
On Jesse Aniebonam
He’s had a really good camp. He’ll play multiple spots for us. He was out sick yesterday, but before that he put together four good practices in a row.
On other injuries
We’re healthy. Everyone finished the scrimmage clean. I’ll get a report afterwards, but I think we’re good.
On depth chart, scout team
After this weekend we’ll start narrowing things down, then on game week we’ll set it.
On Will Likely
He’s really worked on his leadership, come out of his comfort zone and been a leader. He’s a great player and a great kid, but it’s out of his comfort zone to speak up, but he’s really done that. We’ve challenged him to do that, and he has done a great job.
On Teldrick Morgan
He’s an experienced college player, and he has that savvy about him. He can do things pretty special with the ball in his hands. He’s going to help us. He’s a really good receiver, returner, special teams coverage, everything.
On Wade Lees
I think he can be great. He can do so many things. He can punt pro-style, he can do rugby style, end over end, spiral -- he can do it all. That’s a good weapon for us, for sure we’ll be able to swing the field.
On fans coming out to practice
I think it’s great. This is us, this is our area. We love the area, we love our fans… recruits, their families, everyone here. It’s all part of it. This is our stadium, our team, and we’re happy to have [the fans].
